A Texas drag race recently resulted in a tragic collision that took the lives of two children and injured several others. A crowd of spectators had gathered to watch a racing event at Kerrville Airport, not far from San Antonio. Disaster struck when one of the racing cars careened off the track and into the audience.
8 people suffered injuries, 2 died
When a life is lost in a motor vehicle collision, it is always tragic. Grief is intensified when the victim is a child. In this case, a race car veered off the track and into the stands, striking a 6-year-old boy who was pronounced dead at the scene. An 8-year-old child who was also hit by the vehicle initially survived but later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.
It was just before 3:30 p.m. when the accident happened. Several of injured victims were listed in critical condition. Police say a 3-month-old infant and 4-year-old child were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure for observation.
Families of deceased victims may seek restitution
In Texas and all other states, an immediate family member of a deceased victim in a collision may seek restitution by filing a wrongful death claim in a civil court. A plaintiff in such a case is tasked with providing evidence to prove that the defendant’s negligence was a direct cause of the family member’s death. A person who survives a collision caused by driver negligence may also seek financial recovery for his or her losses by filing a personal injury claim.
